p64 summerThe warm weather is great and the sun can be really fun. Going outside though requires some caution on your part since going outdoors involves more than putting some sunscreen on.

Here are some warm weather tips for everyone:

10% Rule

If you want to get fit to fit into your favorite swimwear we suggest that you follow the 10% rule.  This rule means increasing your activity every week gradually instead of going all out immediately which can cause injuries. Ramp up slowly and get in shape.

Walking before running

Unfamiliar paths or terrains are the most common causes of sprains and slips. Don’t go running on an unfamiliar ground. Warm up a bit by walking and also looking for hazards on the path which may cause some mishaps and you need to avoid.

Safe gardening

Gardening may sound simple but it is pretty strenuous with all the bending, twisting, and lifting. Remember to have a proper body mechanics when lifting. Keep the alignment of your spine and lift with your legs. You also need to consider tools which will be very comfortable to use. You can also switch hands when doing some repetitive tasks like raking to avoid overuse injuries.

Chill out

Remember to don comfortable clothing during the summer and use sunblocks which are oil free. This way you can avoid getting some heat rash which is often caused by blocked sweat ducts. This often manifests as reddish bumps or folds on you skin and can be very uncomfortable. You can put some cold compress when you get some rash. There are also over the counter creams which can help with the tiching.

Plant irritants

Summer is also the season where you can get in contact with plants like poison ivy which can really irritate your skin. If you accidentally brush on problem plants, make sure to immediately wash the area with water and soap. Rashes may come up within a day or two and your doctor can give you some meds to help with the condition.
