Stress-reducing Hormone helps out Fighting Couples
A natural hormone called Oxytocin has been found to reduce Cortisol, a stress hormone, in fighting couples.
Beate Ditzen, member of the Psychological Institute of the University of Zurich, worked together with her colleagues to test the said hormone in association with behaviors among couples.
In a test among 47 couples (ages 20-50), the scientists gave the two sets of couples Oxytocin and placebo respectively through a nasal spray. They were placed in a laboratory and were asked to argue on certain conflicting subjects. They were examined according to the coding system applied to video signals. Their Cortisol level was examined through a salivary test.
With all the observations they’ve had, Beate Ditzen and her teammates were able to assess their behaviors. Couples who received Oxytocin showed to have behaved more positively as compared to couples who received placebo. They said that Oxytocin has the capacity of prolonging the length of positive behavior as compared to the negative behavior.
What is it for couples?
Oxytocin, a neuronal mechanism, has a capacity to influence the way couples react to stress. The higher the level of this hormone in couples, the closer the relationship could get. This is something that fighting couples can be happy about. There are many couples who undergo through counseling for always fighting. This might be something that they can use as an aid.
This may be good news for fighting couples but it’s not everything. Fighting is something couples have to deal with among themselves. It’s a matter of handling the relationship and not a matter of medicine or any scientific breakthrough.
